On 14th July, we welcomed Andrew Harris, author and President of the Rotary Club of Louth, who came along to tell us about his unusual journey from human resource management to writing action adventure thrillers.
Andrew began writing in 2014, admitting that he should have started years earlier, although as he put it, ‘procrastination is the thief of time’. Since then, he has certainly made up for it, producing a series of four novels (so far), as part of his ambitious Human Spirit Series.
Andrew uses crime fiction to explore some of the bigger subjects in life; poverty, climate change, feeding the world’s population, the enormous sums spent on weapons and even why, despite all our scientific progress, we haven’t cured cancer. Obviously, a quiet little murder in the village hall wasn’t quite ambitious enough!
A very entertaining and enthusiastic speaker, Andrew also gave insights and advice into the process of writing a novel and provoked a large number of questions from would be Skegness Rotarian ‘Agatha Christies’!
Whilst eating our meal, Andrew advised that his favourite life lesson is ‘Only dead fish go with the flow’ and judging by his varied career, his writing and plans for the future, there seems little sign of him joining the shoal just yet!Our thanks to Andrew for a fascinating, thought-provoking and very entertaining evening – and best wishes for a successful Presidential year with the Rotary Club of Louth.
